What we are particularly looking forward to in the coming weeks

“music full of beauty and exuberant joy”

Helge von Niswandt

Helge von Niswandt is looking forward to “all the  pieces” of our traditional Christmas concert with Konzerthaus Brass Berlin on December 2. This year, the evening is called ‘Baroque and Beyond’, and our principal trombone player has once again come up with a sing-along medley - “Alle Jahre wieder 2024”.

“This is an evolution from last year. This year we have a baroque focus, even though ‘Alle Jahre wieder’ is of course a romantic Christmas carol. But that's just the bracket, inside comes the new, modified part with songs that have their origins in the Baroque period. Our whole programme is diverse, with a varied ensemble. There are quiet and serious moments  as well as music full of beauty and exuberant joy. Without wanting to be to full of pathos: A festive baroque Christmas evening without an ironic twist is perhaps simply a beautiful thing, especially in these times.”

“..great atmosphere and a week of rehearsals”

Elena Cotrone

Elena Cotrone is a member of our orchestra academy and plays in the first violins. She is looking forward to the espresso concert on December 17, where she will be listening to four of her viola colleagues - two academy members and two mentors.

“It's always a lot of fun to prepare for a concert with the academy. The atmosphere is great because we all get on well and rehearse every day for a week. The first day is always about getting to know each other and the music. For the last concert, I played a Dohnányi string trio, for which we had to rehearse a lot. This time I can just listen (laughs).  But in the summer, the whole academy plays in ensembles in the Great Hall - it will be wonderful to be able to make chamber music there.“

“Chamber music is good for the soul”

Ronith Mues

Our Principal Harp Ronith Mues co-founded the Horenstein Ensemble at the Konzerthaus over 15 years ago and is looking forward to their pre-Christmas concert on December 19:

“I love chamber music - it's good for the soul, good for the sound and for fitness on the instrument. I play a lot of chamber music, but I particularly enjoy playing my “Horensteinern”; we have known each other for a long time from the Konzerthausorchester and will be making music together for many years to come.

I am particularly pleased that E.T.A. Hoffmann's Harp Quintet is on the programme this time. There are not as many works for string quartet and harp as there are for flute, violin, viola, cello and harp, for example. It is a marvellous, very classical work with the harp in a leading role, which is usually given to the piano. I played it for the first time when I was 14 or 15 and have played it ever since!”

“‘...hear the angels ascending and descending from Bethlehem”

Dietmar Hiller, programme planner and organ expert at the Konzerthaus for decades, is now in charge of our archive and recommends the organ concert on  December 25:

“With his improvisations on self-chosen or given themes, Matthias Eisenberg has enraptured his audiences for decades and carried them away to thunderous applause. In this year's Christmas Organ Music, he will improvise on well-known Christmas carols, but will first present himself as a profound Bach interpreter again and perform some gems from Bach's rich oeuvre with ‘Orgelbüchlein’ chorales, one of the six organ trio sonatas and Prelude and Fugue in G major as an ‘overture’. Which organ music lover does not know and love Bach's ‘Orgelbüchlein’ chorales with their pictorial tonal language, in which one hears the angels of Bethlehem ascending and descending, the ‘Glory to God in the highest’ on their lips? But Matthias Eisenberg's improvisations also encourage you to ‘take off’ - as an expression of inner joy and enthusiasm - and the listener will certainly leave the Great Hall blessed at the end.”

“...one of the year's highlights”

Anne Tischer, responsible for production in the Marketing department, is looking forward to a festive end to the year:

“The New Year's Eve concert is a highlight for me every year. The festive atmosphere in our beautiful Great Hall, coupled with a varied programme - this year I'm particularly looking forward to the ‘Carnival’ concert overture by Antonín Dvořák - make this concert a perfect end to the year for me. With our chief conductor Joana Mallwitz, there is plenty of energy on stage. And if I can't make it, there's always the New Year's concert on 1 January!”
