“The music of Joseph Haydn is an immeasurable treasure trove full of surprises and discoveries. The sheer abundance of original strokes of genius and unknown gems defies imagination.” – Joana Mallwitz

 In 1761, Prince Esterházy asked Joseph Haydn, who had just been hired as a court musician, (vice)kapellmeister, and house composer,  to compose a symphony cycle based on the times of day - and, of course, he delivered. Morning, noon, and evening unfold in three symphonies that give the court orchestra the opportunity to showcase its great skill. The Konzerthausorchester and Joana Mallwitz dedicate themselves to “Le soir.” Whether Haydn also considered the night is unknown. If that were the case, the work dedicated to it has been lost.

Instead, the KHO and the RIAS Chamber Choir, conducted by Justin Doyle, conclude the concert and Haydn Day with the Missa in B from 1801, which was also commissioned for the prince. It would later be called the “Creation Mass” because a musical quotation from Haydn’s famous oratorio “The Creation” can be heard in the Gloria.
