Rundgang
Far away from the hustle and bustle of the music world, Joseph Haydn revitalised the symphony as Kapellmeister at the Esterházy royal court, developed the string quartet into a mature art form and created numerous original works full of wit, drama and emotion. It was only towards the end of his life that the composer was to be celebrated for this elsewhere. However, he himself was certain for a long time: “My language is understood all over the world.”
This is still true today. Whether you have long loved his music or are just discovering it, our Haydn Day invites you to (re)discover the many facets of this versatile Viennese classic at various venues in and around the Konzerthaus Berlin.
"The music of Joseph Haydn is an immeasurable treasure full of surprises and discoveries. The sheer abundance of original strokes of genius and unknown preciousness is beyond imagination." - Joana Mallwitz
Unfortunately, we cannot replicate the mountain views and rural seclusion of Esterházy Palace – which inspired Joseph Haydn to compose many of his works during the second half of the 18th century – here at the Konzerthaus in the heart of Berlin. However, we are reviving for you some of the pleasant pastimes that people in Haydn’s circle enjoyed alongside music:
In the Beethoven Hall, the Music Club and on the open staircase, immerse yourself in the composer’s leisure hours through reading, correspondence with distant friends, card games and the enjoyment of coffee. And just as spontaneously as musical ideas may have come to him during these moments, various opera characters might appear as if out of nowhere.
However, if you’d prefer not to leave things to chance, why not book a ‘Haydn-style’ breakfast at the Konzerthaus Café as part of a package deal with our matinee concert ‘Haydn in Quartet’? On Haydn Day, the food and drink on offer at the Konzerthaus naturally has an Austrian flavour.
