Born in Tbilisi, trained at the Moscow Conservatory, and living in Vienna since the 1970s, the great pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja has been associated with the Konzerthaus Orchestra and our institution for decades. In 2024, we dedicated an eleven-day tribute to her. On two evenings, she played Johannes Brahms’ two piano concertos for an enthusiastic audience. Now she interprets his three impressive piano sonatas, which the composer, himself a pianist, wrote when he was barely 20 years old. There was still no trace of the struggle that later often accompanied the creation of his symphonies and other works.
