Weihnachtskonzert des Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasiums
The love story of “Daphnis and Chloë”, a young shepherd and shepherdess who discover passion and find each other after all kinds of natural and supernatural obstacles, has been passed down since antiquity and is set in a bucolic landscape animated by shepherds, nymphs, pirates, bacchantes and the god Pan. Maurice Ravel dedicated his longest work to this story, full of exuberant impressionistic harmonies. More often than the entire piece for choir and large orchestra, the two suites derived from it are performed. Another tale of the countryside ist spun by Beethoven in his famous “Pastorale”. With village dance, meadows by the stream and bird calls, we encounter a much more domesticated version of nature than in Ravel's archaic story, though. Even the famous thunderstorm only briefly shakes up the scenery.
