Far away from the hustle and bustle of the music world, Joseph Haydn revitalised the symphony as Kapellmeister at the Esterházy royal court, developed the string quartet into a mature art form and created numerous original works full of wit, drama and emotion. It was only towards the end of his life that the composer was to be celebrated for this elsewhere. However, he himself was certain for a long time: “My language is understood all over the world.”
