WORLD CHOIR
How do connections form when cultural life has been shattered across the globe? When war broke out in Afghanistan almost 50 years ago, a diverse, multicultural pop and classical music scene was driven out of the country along with countless people. Things went quiet around the stars, the cultural creators — and also around their audiences. For in the diaspora, there was often a lack of time, resources and, consequently, structures, in a daily life usually characterised by hard work and making a fresh start. A daily life in which the creation of culture already seemed to be dominated by the respective majority societies. What has emerged as a result is a problem that is passed down through generations. Fortunately, there are people like Armeghan Taheri, our guest this evening. Through the ‘Sarkash سرکش Underground Festival’, which she co-founded, and ‘Afghan Punk’, a platform for art and political activism, she connects the past and present of future generations – in all their multifaceted identities. With perseverance and a consistently analytical approach, the Berlin-based author, artist and subculture activist explores visions of the future. And the question of how we can create conditions in which we can develop new visions for ourselves. We’ll be talking about how she goes about this. And together, we’ll listen, watch and chat our way through examples from her work and her circle — in the third instalment of our ever-cosy living-room-style talk at the music club.
