If you like to dress up, a concert is, of course, a great opportunity to really spruce yourself up. If that’s not really your thing, or if you don’t have time to change after a city tour or a day at work, you’ll fit right in at the concert hall just the same. There’s no dress code, after all.

Actually, nothing except open ears and a desire to listen to music. Please check your coats, bags, backpacks, umbrellas, and so on at the cloakroom.

At least 20 minutes before the concert starts. That leaves enough time to check your coat, use the restroom, find your seat at your own pace, and take a selfie in the auditorium.

For latecomers, there is a late admission after the first, usually short, piece.

It's appreciated as attentive when you slide to your seat facing the people already sitting in the row.

Unless you're our social media manager: Please turn on the airplane mode or turn off the phone completely as soon as the orchestra takes to the stage. This will help ensure that no accidental ringtones go off.

Photos, audio and video recordings are legally prohibited.

In the past, it was common to dine at royal courts whilst listening to an orchestra. Today, unlike at the cinema, the convention in a concert hall is to wait until the intermission to eat and drink, so as to concentrate fully on the music.

Many people worry about this far more than necessary. Traditionally, one waits until the end of the entire piece to applaud, because successive movements are often closely linked musically.

When a movement is finished and the music has moved you so much that you feel like spontaneously applauding the musicians, then go ahead and do it! It’s more of a thing for extroverts, but we think it’s a lovely gesture. A tip for shy people who aren’t familiar with the piece: wait a moment and then join in – the applause can certainly go on for a while!

Our concert intermissions last 25 minutes – plenty of time to stretch your legs inside the venue, buy a snack and have a chat. Several bell chimes signal the end of an intermisson.

Children over the age of 8 can attend “grown-up concerts” accompanied by adults. However, we recommend starting with “Junges Konzerthaus” – that's the name of various concert series for different age groups, nursery groups, and school classes.

Having a tissue and an unwrapped cough sweet to hand saves you from having to rummage around and make rustling noises during quiet passages in a concert.
