“Resonance of Berlin” explores new forms of artistic expression in the digital space and investigates the possibilities of AI in the fields of music and media art. The project was designed to be participatory: using data from participants – who were able to share their feelings about five different locations in Berlin via a chatbot beforehand – combined with typical city sounds and found sound clips from Berlin, a continuous composition was created – performed by the Konzerthausorchester Berlin – which was influenced by the users’ data. The interdisciplinary realisation was carried out by the two artists Kaan Bulak and Lucas Gutierrez, whilst the AI for online data collection was implemented by the Berlin-based agency Birds on Mars.
The entire work can be viewed and listened to here:
Kaan Bulak is a composer, pianist and sound artist between cultures and scenes. His inspiration comes from the diverse musical history of Istanbul as well as the sounds of chamber music and the underground clubs in Berlin. With his ensemble, Bulak plays beyond the boundaries of acoustic or electronic instruments and emphasises his personal expressiveness with electronically enhanced instruments.
Lucas Gutierrez is an Argentinian digital artist and industrial designer. His audiovisual performances and real-time video projects reflect digital culture, remix aesthetics and post-industrial narratives. His works combine design, 3D aesthetics and theory to create immersive, performative visual worlds and have been shown at CTM/transmediale, ZKM, Sonar+D and the Centre Pompidou, among others. Lucas Gutierrez lives in Berlin.
