The META4 string quartet, founded in Helsinki in 2001, won the Shostakovich String Quartet Competition in Moscow and the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna. Between a classical Haydn quartet from 1781 and Ravel’s sole contribution to the genre from 1903, the four Finns have included the third quartet by Grażyna Bacewicz (1909–1969). It was composed in Paris in 1947 and is regarded as an example of the Polish composer’s neoclassical phase.
