The three great Viennese classics in one concert: In the Divertimento, K. 138, Mozart went to great lengths in 1772 to impress his Salzburg patron, the Prince-Archbishop, with the latest Italian style, which he had brought back from his travels to the south. In the course of Joseph Haydn’s famous “Farewell Symphony,” one orchestra member after another leaves the stage. A legend says that it was a veiled hint to Prince Esterházy to end the 1772 summer season so that the musicians could finally return home to their families. But for the Konzerthausorchester and conductor Jonathan Cohen, the evening isn’t over yet, on the contrary: featuring the renowned soloist Antje Weithaas, they will perform Beethoven’s only violin concerto, which is composed in a highly symphonic style. In this piece, the violin engages with the orchestra not as an artistic prima ballerina, but as an equal partner.
