The Konzerthaus Berlin is streaming its season opener live to the Friedrichshain Open-Air Cinema: This turns a concert at the Gendarmenmarkt into a musical experience for many more Berliners. On a balmy late-summer evening, come listen to the Konzerthausorchester Berlin under the stars at your favorite cinema!

The Konzerthausorchester and Jonathan Nott get the season off to a magical start: in “Ma mère l’oye” [“My Mother, the Goose”], Maurice Ravel brings Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Tom Thumb and others to musical life in charming miniatures.

His famous piece “La Valse” from 1920, by contrast, is permeated by eerie undertones, as it is both a dance of death and an ironic homage to the 19th century. The Konzerthausorchester sticks to dancing with movements from Prokofiev’s richly orchestrated, rhythmically complex ballet “Romeo and Juliet”.

In between, our new  composer-in-residence, Unsuk Chin, introduces herself with “Subito con forza” [“suddenly, with force”; 2020] is full of allusions to Beethoven’s music, the 200th anniversary of whose death falls in 2027. Unsuk Chin describes her work as a “personal homage to what is arguably the first modernist composer in the history of music.”

Change to the line-up: Contrary to the announcement in the printed season programme, conductor Jonathan Nott will take the musical direction of the concert.
