Apply for our augmented reality project!

Ausschreibung „makeusvisible @ Konzerthaus Berlin“

The Great Hall of the Konzerthaus Berlin is home to busts of 38 composers. Not a single woman is among them. Designed in 1984, this gallery of busts reflects a generally unequal culture of remembrance within the classical music world, one that leaves little room for the works and biographies of women. We want to change that! Inspired by the #makeusvisible art project, which originated in New York, our first step is to digitally enhance the busts in the Great Hall with three augmented reality elements, thereby promoting an artistic engagement with the one-sidedly dominated classical music world. For the implementation, we are looking for digital artists or a collective with experience in digital art / AR / immersive media who will engage with the figures of Fanny Hensel, Emilie Mayer and the sisters Lili and Nadia Boulanger, and develop original AR artworks in the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus.

The artists’ tasks

  • Artistic concept for the three AR installations
  • Design and production of three AR objects featuring Fanny Hensel, Emilie Mayer, and Lili and Nadia Boulanger (3D sculptures / animated portraits / hybrid forms)
  • Design of the appearance animations (How do the composers materialise?)
  • Visual design of the contextual layer (timeline, text overlays, reflection questions)
  • Where applicable, design of physical markers: The markers in the hall as an independent design element
  • Close collaboration with the concert hall (content/dramaturgy)

What the artist is NOT required to do

  • Programming the app
  • Writing text, possibly monologues
  • Music production

Application documents

  • Portfolio featuring examples of work in the field of AR / digital art / immersive media
  • Short cover letter outlining your initial creative concept (max. 2 pages)
  • Technical details: Experience with 3D software (Unity, Unreal, Blender, Cinema 4D, or similar)
  • Cost estimate (artist’s fee + production costs, if applicable)
  • Availability during the project period

Criteria for selection

  • Artistic quality and originality of the portfolio
  • Sensitivity to the themes of visibility / gender / culture of remembrance
  • Technical feasibility of the idea
  • Alignment with the educational approach (accessibility, no technical jargon)
  • Ability to collaborate (three-person team: artist – concert hall – app development)

Artists or collectives may submit applications for individual female composers as well as for all three works. A jury will decide on the selection. Applications may be sent to digital@konzerthaus.de by 14 June 2026. The decision is final. Should you have any queries, please contact Anne Eiselein at a.eiselein@konzerthaus.de.
