Passionate musicality, explosive virtuosity and intellectual curiosity characterise the pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, born in 1984 in Reykjavík, who has received all the major awards in his native Iceland. He studied at the Juilliard School, and since 2012 has been artistic director of the Reykjavík Midsummer Music Festival, which he also founded. Ever since releasing two albums with music by Philip Glass and Johann Sebastian Bach on Deutsche Grammophon, he has also had a large global following.
We are delighted to welcome Víkingur to the 2019/20 season as Artist in Residence with eleven concerts at the Konzerthaus, including a Bach recital, chamber music with the Danish String Quartet, clarinettist Martin Fröst and baritone Florian Boesch, a concert as soloist with the Konzerthausorchester under Christoph Eschenbach in which he plays “In Seven Days” by Thomas Adès, and an evening with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of composer Daníel Bjarnason, whose piano concerto “Processions” was specially written for Víkingur.
