Rundgang
Outstanding young musicians from Ukraine, Lithuania and Germany will perform a work that is literally “survival music” and a sign of hope: Messiaen’s “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” draws on his deep Catholic spirituality and motifs from the biblical apocalypse. The third movement is a clarinet solo that was first heard in June 1940 in a field near Nancy, where thousands of French soldiers, including the performing clarinettist and composer Olivier Messiaen, were held prisoner. The complete work was premiered in January 1941 in a prison camp near Görlitz, where the two and other musicians were transported.
