Intoxication as ritual, repetition as transformation? In their new music theatre production, Nico and the Navigators, who celebrate their 25th anniversary as an ensemble this year, combine John Adams’ “Shaker Loops” about a religious community’s ecstatic dances with contemporary orchestral works and pop songs. “Lost in Loops” deals with various states of consciousness, including frenzy, intoxication and exhilaration, the numbing of knowledge and conscience, as well as loneliness and the attempt to free oneself from the shackles of reality.
