In her songs, singer-songwriter and rock guitarist Fatoumata Diawara is an attentive chronicler of political developments in her home country, Mali. But the fact that her music deals with rather gloomy topics such as threats to freedom through Islamist terror, corruption and forced marriages is not immediately discernible. The concert is part of the “Mali Magic & Timbuktu Manuscripts” project from Google Arts & Culture, which aims to preserve and publicise West Africa’s cultural heritage.
